1. A resilient and generous plant
Hibiscus sabdariffa is a tropical plant cultivated for its calyxes, which are used in infusions or in the food industry. Burkinature's partner producers mainly cultivate it in the Center-West, North, and Upper Basins regions.
2. Seeding and organic farming
The seeds are sown during the wet season (June-July). The plant grows without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Weeding is done manually, and natural inputs (composted manure) are preferred.
3. Harvesting: timing is everything
Once flowering is complete, the fleshy calyxes are harvested by hand, then separated from their seeds using a simple but effective tool (manual decalcifier or slotted table).
4. Drying
The calyxes are washed and then dried on racks in a ventilated shelter for 4 to 7 days, protected from dust and direct light. This slow drying process preserves the dark red color and aromatic qualities of the product.
5. Sorting and packaging
The flowers are sorted manually to remove any residue, graded, and then packed into bags. They can then be shipped in bulk or repackaged as needed.
6. A health and equity sector
Rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, and minerals, hibiscus is prized for its virtues. It is certified organic and fair trade, generating additional income for many women in rural areas.
