Sesame seeds

Burkinature sells organic and fair trade sesame seeds sourced from structured supply chains in Burkina Faso, mainly for organic oil mills and specialized markets.

Recognized expertise

Over the years, the sale of sesame seeds has become an essential source of income for farmers in Burkina Faso. This cash crop requires little water and does not need the use of pesticides.

These characteristics make it possible to produce sesame in the arid Sahelian zone in northern Burkina Faso, a region dominated by livestock farming and the sale of live cattle to neighboring countries. Burkinature SARL's sesame sector has developed in partnership with producers in the north of the country.

Burkinature works in collaboration with local producer organizations to sustainably structure the organic sesame sector in rural areas with high potential. These partnerships aim to strengthen technical support for producers, improve crop quality, and secure commercial outlets, even in complex contexts.

Operating sustainably in a demanding environment

For several years now, Burkina Faso has been facing a complex security and climate situation, which has had a significant impact on rural areas and agricultural sectors, particularly sesame. In this context, Burkinature has chosen to maintain its activities, support its partner producer organizations, and adapt its methods of intervention in order to ensure the continuity of the sectors, the safety of its teams, and the regularity of exports. This ability to adapt and its long-term presence in the field are now one of the pillars of Burkinature's strength and credibility with its international partners.

1. An ancestral culture

Sesame has been cultivated for centuries in Burkina Faso. At Burkinature, we work with more than 2,000 producers in the Boucle du Mouhoun, Centre-Nord, and Centre-Ouest regions. The varieties used (white, mainly Humera and S42) are adapted to the local climate.

2. An organic farming method

Producers adhere to strict organic specifications: no chemicals, manual weeding, crop rotation, organic compost. Our teams provide technical support via the ICS (internal control system).

3. Careful manual harvesting

Sesame is harvested by hand, then left to dry upright (in sheaves) for a few days before being threshed to release the seeds. This step, although physically demanding, helps preserve the quality of the seeds.

4. Cleaning and sorting

The seeds are delivered to our center in Ouagadougou, where they are mechanically sorted, cleaned, and sometimes hulled, according to customer specifications. Samples are taken for quality control (impurity level, moisture content, color, oil content, etc.).

5. Packaging & export

Sesame seeds are packaged in bags weighing between 25 and 50 kg, depending on orders, with full traceability. They are then exported mainly to Europe for use in the food industry, baking, or processing into oil or tahini.

6. A seed of solidarity

Our supply chains are certified organic and Fair Trade. The premium paid supports community projects (well drilling, school canteens, market gardening, etc.).
